Digital Detox

The Clear Thinkers concert series (original title Scherpdenkers ) brings together music, philosophy and science, encouraging reflection on current themes. Ragazze Quartet provides the musical accompaniment for this concert series, an initiative of the Concertgebouw and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.

In the edition Digital Detox, Ragazze Quartet, together with Ap Dijksterhuis, connects music with the treacherous appeal of smartphones and the search for moments of mental peace. The theme comes to life through the minimalist and repetitive patterns in the contemporary compositions of Gabriella Smith, Bryce Dessner, and Daniel Wohl. Central to this are the texture and timbre of the music.

Daniel Wohl

French American Daniel Wohl is a contemporary composer known for his combination of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. In his work, he searches for a specific timbre that forms the basis of the piece. Acoustic performances and electronic sounds come together, creating the interaction between humans and technology that he envisions.

For this edition of Clear Thinkers, he wrote a commissioned composition that reflects the theme of Digital Detox. The interaction between humans and technology in his music reflects the constant temptation of our smartphones.
